Women in Venture Retreat Success + Compensation Data!

The first half of the year has been a busy one for us!

We were heads down planning and delivering another successful Women in Venture Retreat event as well as gathering and crunching through comprehensive Women in Venture compensation data, which I plan to share more on a follow-up post.

In March, we hosted our 2nd Annual Women in Venture Retreat, a two-day content and community building summit for 40 emerging female investors across the U.S.

The attendees included rising star investors from the following leading firms ACME, Adams Street Partners, Amplify, Anthemis, Backstage Capital, Bain Capital, Canaan, CircleUp, CRV, CCV, Coatue, DFJ, Emergence Capital, Emerson Collective, Felicis Ventures, First Round Capital, GGV Capital, Industry Ventures, Jane VC, Kapor Capital, Precursor, Make in LA, Maven, Muse Capital, NEA, NextGen Venture Partners, Owl, Scale Venture Partners, Shasta Ventures, Spero, Storm Ventures, Underscore and Unshackled.

The content was centered around professional and personal development and lively discussion on:

· How the Industry has Evolved and How to be Successful in a Sea of Noise — Ann Winblad (Winblad Venture Partners), Heidi Roizen (DFJ), moderated by Jocelyn Kinsey (DFJ)

· Raising Your Game in Innovation Investing: Venture career development, thesis development and portfolio construction — Kirsten Green (Forerunner Ventures), Trae Vasallo (Defy), Ted Maidenberg (Tribe), moderated by Jomayra Herrera (Cowboy)

· The Art of Perception: Using art to systematically sharpen observation, analysis and communication skills — Amy Herman

· Board Dynamics — Bob Tinker (MobileIron), Leah Busque (Fuel Capital), moderated by Pascale Diaine (Storm Ventures)

· Self-Reflection: How to use valuable tools and connections going forward to continue to soar in your career — Jacqueline Hawk (Soar Coaching & Consulting)

· LP Ask Me Anything — Jaclyn Hester (Foundry Group), Margo Doyle (S-Cubed), moderated by Suzy Ryoo (Q&A)

By hosting events like our Annual Women in Venture Retreat, we get to achieve the following:

1) Fostering new relationships while further solidifying existing ones,

2) Sharing information, and

3) Building community

Given the community demand, we’ll be continuing the Retreat tradition in 2020. We’ve lined up and are thrilled to unveil our Women in Venture 2020 Steering Committee!

We’re excited to announce that Carolina Huaranca (Kapor Capital), Jillian Williams (Anthemis), Grace Chou (Felicis), Laura Chau (Canaan), Merritt Hummer (Bain Capital), Kelly Borland (Deloitte), Meggie Muyot (FRB), Judy Lee Canalin (FRB) and I will be hosts for 2020’s Women in Venture Retreat!

Thank you to the 2019 Women in Venture Retreat Steering Committee members Jocelyn Kinsey (DFJ), Jomayra Herrera (Emerson Collective), Pascale Diaine (Storm), Robin Li (GGVC), Suzy Ryoo (CCV), Tiffine Wang (SingTel), Jacque Hawk for helping successfully transition from year one to year two.

To learn more about our Women in Venture (“WIV”) effort, check out our key initiatives below and let us know if you’d like to participate in any one of them:

· The world’s largest database of Women in Venture: found at bit.ly/womeninventureDB. We continue to track women in venture across roles in the US and globally, and grow the database. So, feel free to let us know if you or anyone else in your community is missing and we’ll make sure to add you/them.

· Personal Branding and Thought Leadership: in an effort to showcase the next generation of female investors, we carefully follow and interview select women! If you’re interested in being featured and elevating your brand on my next series of interviews, please let me know. The audience is mainly founders and prospective LPs. Check out the medium posts here: https://medium.com/@yanghana.

· Community Building: bringing the best integrated community building experience through curated and intimate events.

· WIV Compensation Survey: we’ve launched the first Women in VC Anonymous Compensation Survey. We invite all women who work at a venture capital firm to participate, no matter your role, title, or function. Participants will have access to the results.

If you’re a woman in venture who is interested in connecting with us, email us at hanayang@firstrepublic.com.
